Handley House gardening club harvests first crops of the year
Gardening Club members at Handley House have been growing their own fruits and vegetables to give to their local community.
Members of the club began to plan their new garden earlier this year, while preparing for Ideal Carehomes’ Gardens in Bloom competition.
Gardens in Bloom is an annual competition run throughout all Ideal Carehomes, with an aim to engage care teams, residents and the local community in creating wonderful outside spaces for everyone to enjoy.
So far, the new garden at Handley House has been a huge success, with the residents harvesting their first crops of the year.
The residents were thrilled to grow lettuces, radishes, strawberries and cucumbers.
Kenneth Blackhurst, resident and keen gardener, said:
‘I’ve always loved gardening, and I love to watch things grow because it’s so fulfilling – especially when I can eat it!
‘When I grow something and pick it out of the ground, not knowing what it’s going to look like, it’s like Christmas.’
Thrilled with the outcome, the residents decided to share their success with visiting friends and families. They left their harvest in the reception area for anyone to take home. The home-grown veggies were snapped up in no time.
Charlie Parker, the Home Manager at Handley House, said:
‘It’s great to see our green-fingered residents working together to create a garden we can be proud of. We’re all very excited to see what they grow next. I’m sure there will be many more scrumptious veggies growing in the gardens!’
On 3rd September from 12:00-16:00, Handley House will be holding their annual Summer Fayre. The Gardening Club will be selling their home-grown products to the public. The Summer Fayre will be open to all and free to attend, with live entertainment, games and much more.
