83-year-old Mollie Richmond from Hambleton Grange care home in Thirsk went swimming for the first time in 15 years recently, after she expressed her wish to get back in the water.
When Mollie moved into Hambleton Grange in 2022, she told her carers that she wanted to be able to move around without her wheelchair.
After working on different exercises with the team at Hambleton Grange, Mollie recently felt strong enough to enjoy a dance with her husband during a recent celebration in the home.
Mollie later expressed to the team at Hambleton Grange how much she wished she could go swimming – something she hadn’t been able to enjoy since 2008.
Happy to grant Mollie’s wish, the carers in the home took Mollie for her own private swimming session. Mollie said,
‘I wanted to go swimming because I hoped it would help me strengthen my legs, and I really enjoyed the whole day! Even though I haven’t been swimming for many years, it was so easy being back in the water.
‘My next goal is to be able to dance on my own at Hambleton Grange’s Christmas Party!’
Sandra Anderson, the Home Manager at Hambleton Grange, added, ‘We’re so grateful that we’re able to support our residents to achieve their goals, and to see Mollie’s face light up as she got in the water was a very heartwarming moment.
‘We’re looking forward to seeing Mollie bust a move at Christmas!’
