‘As long as we’re together, nothing else matters’ – 72-Year-Old June Shares Memories of Christmases Past
72-year-old June Beniston from Bradley Hall care home in Leicester has been sharing her most cherished family memories at Christmas as part of Ideal Carehomes’ ‘Merry Memories’ campaign.
As a child, June always spent Christmas Day with her parents and two sisters. June said, ‘We would wake up on Christmas morning and run into our parents’ room to open our presents!
‘One year I was given a Cinderella watch, I remember it like it was yesterday. I had always wanted one and I was so happy. It was the best present ever; I still have it now.’
Thinking back to her fondest memory of Christmas Day with her family, June continued, ‘My dad had travelled all the way to Birmingham to pick up our Christmas turkey for dinner.
‘It was only when he came back that he realised the turkey had no legs! My mum was furious.’ Jean laughed, ‘At the end of the day we all sat round our table laughing at our legless turkey.’
When June had a family of her own, her and her husband worked hard to make sure their three children got everything they wanted for Christmas. June said, ‘We always went to my husband’s parents’ house for Christmas dinner and play lots of games.’
This year, June and her husband plan to celebrate Christmas with their friends at Bradley Hall. June added, ‘As long as we have each other, nothing else matters to us.’
Sarah Clark, the Home Manager at Bradley Hall, said, ‘We all had a good laugh at June’s memory of a legless turkey! It’s so wonderful to hear all our residents’ ‘Merry Memories’, and even better that we can help them to make new memories this Christmas.
‘We’re also inviting over 65s in our area to spend Christmas Day with us and enjoy a delicious homemade Christmas dinner! Our residents can’t wait to meet new friends and spread some festive cheer.’
