‘Be each other’s best friend’ – Happy Droitwich Couple Celebrate Platinum Wedding Anniversary

Nonagenarian couple from Woodland View care home in Droitwich, Margaret and Tony Sawyer, recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Margaret and Tony met on Margaret’s family farm in Stratford Upon Avon. Tony would often visit the farm to pick fruit, and later began helping out with jobs whilst he was in sixth form.

The pair got to know each other very well, and after a few years of courting, got married on 29th December 1953 at St Gregory’s Church in Stratford. Margaret said,

‘The weather was chilly but sunny on our wedding day. I made my own dress – it was a beautiful gown with a collar and buttons all the way down the front. We then had our reception at The Royal Hotel.’

To celebrate their Platinum anniversary, Margaret and Tony enjoyed their favourite meal of baked haddock coupled with homemade tiramisu at Woodland View with their four children.

Tony said, ‘Our day has been wonderful, and we can’t thank Woodland View enough for all they have done to make our day so special.’

The couple’s son, Liam, added, ‘Woodland View have made mum and dad’s day so special; it was great for us to all be together to celebrate!’

Margaret and Tony also received a card from His Majesty King Charles III, congratulating them on their anniversary.

When asked what their advice to a long and happy marriage would be, Tony and Margaret agreed, ‘Just say ‘yes dear’, and then do whatever you were planning on doing in the first place! Be each other’s best friend.’
