90-year-old Rose Sheehan from Thorn Springs care home in Houghton Regis recently raised over £1000 for Dementia UK by walking 1K a Day for a month.
Born in Paddington, Rose moved to Lewsey Farm in Luton in 1960 with her family. She joined the Women’s Voluntary Service and worked at Luton and Dunstable Hospital before later retiring to spend time with her family.
Rose moved into Thorn Springs in October 2022, and has since been enjoying taking part in activities such as baking, games, scrapbooking and visiting the theatre.
Accompanied by the care home’s manager, Katie Hughes, Rose was determined to offer a helping hand to those living with dementia and wants them to know that ‘support is out there’.
The pair had a blast during their daily walks, visiting local places of interest, meeting new people, and stopping to watch the sunrise.
They even surpassed their goal of walking 1K a Day, reaching 77km in total by the end of the month-long challenge and raising £1052 including Gift Aid.
Thrilled to have completed the challenge for Dementia UK, Rose said,
‘I was delighted to complete the walks, I enjoyed them very much. I got to make new friends, and Katie and I got to spend time together and get to know each other. I’m already looking forward to the next challenge.’
Katie added,
‘I was very grateful to be part of this amazing fundraiser, and to have created so many new connections within our community. Rose’s enthusiasm and determination has had a huge impact by letting others know that support is out there.’
