‘Christmas Has Changed Since I was a Child’ – Centenarian Shares ‘Merry Memories’ on 100th Christmas
100-year-old Una Hopkin from Launton Grange care home is sharing her memories of Christmases past as part of Ideal Carehomes’ ‘Merry Memories’ campaign.
Throughout her childhood, Una and her family would get together at her grandmother’s house on Christmas Day. Una said,
‘We used to stand around the piano singing Christmas carols, all taking turns to play. Christmas was the only time our whole family got together.
‘My father was always given a turkey from work for us to have for dinner and we’d open our gifts from family in the evening, along with a stocking Santa left at the end of our beds.’
Reminiscing about the gifts Santa left under the tree during her childhood, Una commented, ‘The most memorable gift I ever received was a scooter. I was never allowed a bicycle, but this was the next best thing!’
When Una grew older, she continued the tradition created by her grandmother, making sure her family was always together on Christmas Day.
Una added, ‘Christmas has changed a lot since I was a child. People spend far too much money and often forget the real meaning of Christmas, which is family. If I could have one Christmas wish, it would be for all families to get along.’
Zoe Spillane, the Home Manager at Launton Grange, said, ‘For many of our residents, Christmas has changed a lot over the years. This will mark Una’s 100th Christmas, and it’s so heartwarming to hear all of her ‘Merry Memories’.
‘Learning about our residents’ traditions and cherished memories helps us to make sure we give them an extra special Christmas – we can’t wait to celebrate with them.’
When asked what she would be doing for Christmas this year, Una said, ‘I’ll be spending Christmas with all my friends at Launton Grange.’
