Four residents’ wish to fish was granted by staff at Lime Trees care home recently, where a friendly competition soon evoked between the ladies and gentlemen in the group.
Hugo Jones (86), Greta Bunning (79), John Colborne (84) and Veronica Coggins (85) all expressed their desire to go on a fishing trip – Hugo and John because they hadn’t been fishing since their childhoods, Veronica because she had never had the opportunity to try fishing, and Greta because she used to fish with her husband (and also wanted to ‘beat the boys’).
Hugo Jones said, ‘It was a really good day! I remember fishing with my dad, it brought some wonderful memories back. This was my first time fishing in a pond; we always used to fish in canals.’
The group turned the trip in to a ‘boys vs girls’ contest to see which pair could catch the most fish. At the end of the day the women prevailed, catching 17 fish in comparison to the men’s eight.
Greta said, ‘I loved it, and we won! I used to go fishing all the time with my husband when the weather was nice.’
Karen Williams, the Home Manager at Lime Trees, added, ‘We’re so glad we could grant our residents’ wish to go on a fishing trip, and we all had such a fantastic day together.
‘Each resident had stories to tell of their past experiences, and enjoyed making new memories with their friends at Lime Trees.’
You can meet the residents at Lime Trees at the home’s Chatty Café coffee morning, every Tuesday from 10:30. All are welcome to pop along for a hot drink, cake and a chat.
