85-year-old Meltham Community Choir singer from Greenacres care home, David Earnshaw, was recently awarded a medal for Loyal Service after being a member of the group for over 70 years.
Founded around the 1920s, Meltham-born David joined the choir in 1946, when he was just eight years old at St Bartholomew Church. Speaking about his memories as a devoted choir singer, David said,
‘My most cherished memory from singing in the choir was singing at a funeral for a young local soldier. It was a full military service with top brass.’
David was presented his medal by fellow choir member and life-long friend, Catherine Moulson, who said,
‘David has been with the choir for nearly 80 years and he’s a very good singer! He’s kind and considerate and has done a lot for the community of Meltham.’
When Catherine awarded David with his medal for Loyal Service, David smiled from ear to ear. He said he felt ‘very happy and proud’.
Verity Taylor, the Home Manager at Greenacres, said,
‘To see David honoured for his dedication to Meltham Community Choir was a very heartwarming moment. We can’t wait to invite the choir into the home to perform with David; he has a wonderful voice and it’ll be fantastic to reunite him with all his old friends.’
Residents at Greenacres are also inviting members of the community to join them every Tuesday from 10:30 until 12:00 for their Chatty Café. All are welcome to enjoy hot drinks, homemade treats and a chat with staff and residents in the home.
