Married couple of 56 years, Susan and Edward Dyson, have been reunited in their care home after three months apart just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Susan (75) and Edward (79), who now live at Millcroft care home in Redditch, first met in an ICI Fibres research lab in Harrogate in 1965 where they both worked. Susan said,
‘Edward looked lovely, he was gentle and quiet – though I soon found out he wasn’t quiet at all!’
After courting each other for two years, the couple married in Saint Luke’s Church in Harrogate, and later moved to Bradford so Edward could go to university, where he studied for a PHD in textiles.
Edward later got a job as a technician for Marks and Spencer’s, which meant the couple spent time moving all over the country whilst raising their three children, Kirsty, Hannah and Richard. When Edward retired, the couple settled down in Birmingham.
In December 2022, Susan decided to move into Millcroft, but missed having her husband nearby, saying ‘being separated has been hard for both of us.’
Finally, the day before Valentine’s Day, Edward was able to join Susan at Millcroft, where they were thrilled to be reunited. Edward said,
‘We are delighted to be back together and have each other for company again.’
To celebrate, the care staff at Millcroft wanted to make the couple’s Valentine’s Day one to remember. They prepared a delicious, freshly cooked meal, served in the home’s dining area, which was decorated with hearts. Susan said,
‘We have had a lovely meal, and we liked the hearts on the table. The mini chocolate cakes were very nice – it was all on par with a five-star hotel!’
Lyndsay Sard, the Home Manager at Millcroft, said,
‘Watching Susan and Edward reunite in our wonderful home has been truly heart-warming. We’re glad we could make their Valentine’s Day so special, and we’re looking forward to supporting them both to continue living the happy life they’ve built together.’
Millcroft are inviting their local community to a weekly ‘Chatty Café’ coffee morning every Wednesday from 10:30. All are welcome for coffee, tea, cake and a chat with the Millcroft residents.
