Wakefield care home, Hepworth House, has been named a finalist in care home provider, Ideal Carehomes’, annual Gardens in Bloom competition.
Gardens in Bloom aims to engage Ideal Carehomes’ teams, residents and the local community in creating wonderful outside spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Hepworth House was shortlisted as a finalist for the West Yorkshire by the Gardens in Bloom judges, who were impressed by the miniature ‘fairy garden’ and newly built bird feeder area.
Lisa Harding, Ideal Carehomes’ Regional Director and Gardens in Bloom judge in West Yorkshire, said, ‘The ‘fairy garden’ is really sweet, and it’s clear that the residents had a fun time putting this together – the detail is incredible!’
‘The bird watching area is amazing to sit and watch from the lounge, and the use of solar lights has really added something special to the space. Our residents and staff at Hepworth House have created some truly unique outdoor areas, I’m so impressed by the thought that has gone in to each part of the garden.’
86-year-old resident, Elizabeth Parkin, said ‘I made the decision to move to this care home, and one thing I missed was my garden. I now feel like have my own garden at Hepworth House! I had a say in choosing the flowers and bushes.
‘I have had a lilac bush in every house I have lived in, and now I have one here – the lilac bush flowers were in mine and my mother’s wedding bouquet, so they’re very special to me.’
Helen Batty, the Home Manager at Hepworth House, said ‘I have really enjoyed working with our residents to turn our garden into something that is special to each individual resident. We created the bird area for our avid bird watchers, the fairy garden for the children who come to visit their loved ones and chose flowers of sentimental value to our residents. We’re so proud of what our residents have created, and we can’t wait to see who the wins the competition!’
